Below is a list of my favorite tools and tricks of the trade (updated sporadically).
Browsers:
- Firefox when you need addons
- Chrome when you want speed & simplicity
- Opera when you’re looking for something different
Languages:
- Python for most everything
- PHP when all you need is a server-side extension to HTML
- Shell Scripting when you need to do something quick and dirty
Web frameworks:
- Python’s heavyweights: TurboGears, Pylons, Django
- PHP: Kohana, or CakePHP if you want a “Rails clone”
- The one that started it all: Rails
Content Management Systems:
- Drupal when you need some heavy lifting
- WordPress when you need something simple
